Immersion Philosophy
Neuro Institute has a specialized “Immersion Therapy Philosophy”
"Immersion Therapy" is a scientifically proven method for producing
permanent neurological changes. The Neuro Institute's "Immersion"
program has been proven to provide the best opportunity for success
by patients challenged with traumatic brain injury, spinal cord
injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and all forms of
paralysis.
By "immersing" themselves in quality, caring, positive,
comprehensive rehabilitation, many patients achieve success!
At Neuro Institute we
believe each individual should have the best opportunity to reach
their highest potential.
Our programs have always been flexible and comprehensive. We also
have learned from experience that we must deal with the realities of
each clients insurance, finances and time limitations, as well as a
willingness to fully dedicate themselves to their rehab program. We
are also well aware that individuals may at times have to deal with
family issues and other areas of their lives that must also take
priority.
Neuro Institute continues to offer two rehabilitation tracks,
Standard Therapy which may involve all three disciplines, physical,
occupational and speech therapies and our Recovery Program that can
and do follow our immersion philosophy. Both are under the
supervision of a medical professional.
The Standard Therapy Program is one that many times is developed
within the limitations of the insurance company and the client. We
still expect to help achieve the goals of the client, within these
limitations.
Our Recovery Program is for those clients who have few, if any
limitations. This program is for those who’s insurance and finances
place no limitations or restrictions on the types of exercise or
activities that each client and therapist determines is best for
success. This program is not an injury management program. It is
designed to give each individual a chance to recover as much
function as possible without limits.
FES Program
At
Neuro Institute
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) and Functional
Electrical Stimulation (FES) are techniques that we employ to help
patients regain function and optimize health and outcomes. Our
center is ideally suited to evaluate, determine appropriateness, and
to use this technology over the coarse of your rehabilitation
program with us. However, we believe that this modality should
continue at home after The Neuro Institute program is completed.
Home-based electrotherapy is a an efficient way to continue and to
build upon the success achieved at The Neuro Institute.

Philip
Muccio, Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist, founder of Bioflex
Electromedicine, has over 20 years of electrical stimulation
experience working with both Neuro and orthopedic patients. He
developed the Bioflex Wearable Therapy and NeuroProsthetic Systems
for NeuroRehab and Pain Management. Christopher Reeve used the
Bioflex Wearable Therapy System 1-2 hours per day to keep his body
toned and conditioned.
Patients can
be evaluated for the Wearable Therapy System at The Neuro
Institute.
Bioflex Electromedicine (About the
Technology)
“The Bioflex Wearable
Therapy System is the only customized, surface electrical
stimulation system designed specifically for each patient. These
Systems enable the spinal cord injured as well as individuals with
stroke, head injury, cerebral pasly and multiple sclerosis, to
maintain the health and integrity of the body by stimulating muscles
at home where it can be used on a daily basis. Therapeutic muscle
stimulation can promote stronger muscles, reduce spasticity and
pain, increase function, improve spinal posture and facilitate
better limb circulation.
Wearable Therapy Systems
The Bioflex Electrode
Garment is fully custom-made to target specific muscle groups. They
are made for all aspects of the body and are easily put on and taken
off and are non-invasive. Electrotherapy can be quite complicated
to use. However, the electrode garment simplifies the process. The
garments are used to transition patients from clinic-based
electrical stimulation therapy to home use.
Bioflex’s body-contoured
garments incorporate electrodes and lead wires to minimize the setup
time and eliminate placement errors. For example, it is possible for
a tetraplegia patient to stimulate as many muscle groups as desired
with this system, including the arms, back, abs, and legs.
In some intances, the
electrode garments can be worn throughout the day to maximize the
benefit. The garments can be used in this mannner to build muscle,
control spasticity and reduce contractures and pain.
NeuroProsthetic Systems
NeuroProsthetic Systems are
electrical stimulation devices that are worn on the body to impart
function to the limbs or trunk. NeuroProsthetic Systems can
substitute for the loss of function by generating muscle movements
at appropriate times of sitting, standing, walking, and arm
function. This technology can, in certain circumstances, eliminate
the need for bracing. The advantage, of coarse, is that it’s much
better for the body to have the freedom to move under its own power
than for the joints to be locked or fixed. These Systems produce
more fluid movement and help patients attain higher levels of
function.
